AEA Microgeneration Index
February 2011: Consultancy AEA have taken Ofgem’s Feed in Tariff (FIT) quarterly data reports of installations of qualifying renewable energy technologies, tidied up the excel spreadsheet data, to help provide a clearer regional breakdown of capacity and types of renewable energy systems installed. For London this goes down to individual borough reports.

Funding approved for new gasification project
9 February 2011:The London Waste and Recycling Board (LWARB) has today agreed a £8.9 million loan to Biossence East London Ltd to support the development of what will be one of the UK’s first large scale advanced waste to energy gasification plants. Anticipated to operational in 2013 the 19MW generator will turn 100,000 tonnes of waste each year into energy. The site has been bought from Ford, who will part-benefit from electricity generated by the plant. Further information on the LWARB press release. More on Bioessence here.

London Plan- Monitoring Energy and Carbon
7 February 2011: The London Plan Annual Monitoring Report has been published which provides information on two key per performance indicators of interest:
KPI 22: Reduction in CO2 emissions – which sets out a useful table showing a time series of sectoral emissions in London from 1990 to 2008, however, in relation to newer data the AMR states “No new data are available since the last AMR was published, with the most recent measurement of London’s CO2 emissions being the 2008 London Energy and Greenhouse Gas Inventory (LEGGI). It is anticipated that data on carbon dioxide emissions will in the future be published annually, but two years in arrears given the analysis required. Information for assessing the 2010 benchmark will therefore only be available in 2012.”
KPI 23: Increase in energy generated from renewable sources – the AMR states that “No new data have been collected in the last two years” but “The GLA has commissioned a new study that will investigate the potential for renewable energy and
also provide updated figures on the amount of current generation in London (the ‘London Renewable and Decentralised Energy Potential Study’).”

Building a Low Carbon Britain
7 Feb 2011: Forum for the Future and ADEPT report launched today which makes five recommendations for how local authorities can prepare their areas and communities for a low carbon future. It presents four scenarios which explore plausible, alternative visions of a low carbon UK. The report states that “Local authorities will have a key role to play in the low carbon economy of the future. This project aimed to help local authorities understand what a low-carbon economy means for them and to find opportunities for low-carbon innovation in a time of public sector cuts.” Press release and report available here.
