Heat efficient Holborn
6 June 2011: inmidtown – which represents the interests of 560 businesses in Holborn, Bloomsbury and St Giles – is working with Camden to explore opportunities to increase the use of decentralised energy in the area by linking heat loads together. Further information on their energy sharing initiative here.

Mayor’s responses to London Assembly energy and climate change questions
May 2011: The Mayor’s responses to the London Assembly on energy and climate change questions questions included:
- progress on the Mayor’s domestic energy efficiency retrofit programme (RE:NEW)
- the Mayor’s work on supporting the development of decentralised energy schemes
- the publication date of the Mayor’s Climate Change Mitigation and Energy Strategy;reducing London’s dependency on oil
- the Mayor’s support for the Warm Homes Amendment in the Energy Bill currently going through Parliament
- City Hall’s Carbon Trust certification; the Mayor’s support to the Elephant and Castle decentralised energy scheme
- and a question in relation the Mayor’s budget for climate change programmes.

Dalston Square – Decentralised Energy
May 2011: A presentation and case study by the energy services section of E.ON on the Dalston Decentralised Energy (DE) project that they have developed and now operate. Serving 553 residential units over 5 blocks with retail units and a public library, the energy centre is powered by gas-fired combined heat and power units (CHPs) and gas/biomass boilers.
Cities should be allowed to become more financially independent
23 May 2011: The City Finance Commission have today published the results of their inquiry into the current system of city local government finance recommending that cities should be allowed to become more financially independent, to strengthen their ability to drive both local and national economic growth, deliver localism and to increase care for their communities. Of interest to supporting the development of low carbon solutions, the report proposes that new Tax Increment Financing (TIF) powers for local authorities and Business Improvement Districts should be introduced to support local infrastructure investment.
Legal Frameworks for Sustainable Community Infrastructure
20 May 2011: The UK-Green Building Council – in conjunction with the Zero Carbon Hub – launched the interim findings of the Legal Frameworks for Sustainable Community Infrastructure. The report represents work by an industry task group on what is needed for the development of standardised legal frameworks across the industry to facilitate the growth of Sustainable Community Infrastructure and reduce associated costs and burdens.
London’s Energy Gap
19 May 2011: London Assembly Environment Committee note – in advance of a briefing session – on the issue of future energy supplies to London (see Agenda Item 8).
New DECC CHP Site Assessment Tool
16 May 2011: New DECC tool posted on CHP Focus website allowing users to “get an indicative assessment and review potential options for installing CHP on a particular site and it has been carefully designed for users who have limited knowledge of CHP.”

3 May 2011: Updates on Southwark’s work with SELCHP on taking waste heat from the power station to nearby residential estates: 27 April update; 3 May update.

Hospital’s Decentralised Energy System
26 April 2011: Mitie have been commissioned by the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead to develop an energy centre incorporating onsite CHP generation.
E.ON to manage ESCo set-up
21 April 2011: E.ON and Barratt Homes are working together to develop 1,900 low carbon homes in two projects across London. The developments, the former St. Andrews Hospital in east London and New South Quarter in Croydon, will utilise a centralised combined heat and power (CHP) units and biomass boilers to supply heat and hot water to residents.
Low Carbon London
13 April 2011: Guardian feature on future electricity demand includes comment from UK Power Networks (London’s electricity distribution network operator) on their Low Carbon London project (more of which on Ofgem’s website).
