Middle East unrest means increase in heating and hot water bills

11 April 2011:News release from Westminster in relation to the pricing of energy from their communal heating systems: “Tenants and leaseholders in Westminster will see increases in their heating and hot water bills of around a five pounds a week, council bosses have confirmed.This is because energy costs are rising substantially, spikes in global demand and ongoing political instability in the Middle East. Around 5,000 households with communal heating systems will be affected. The council and CityWest have written to all affected residents.

Energy strategy for White City OAPF

8 April 2011: The GLA and Hammersmith and Fulham council have issued a consultation on the White City Opportunity Area Planning Framework (OAPF). Included within the framework documentation, chapter 8 of the main OAPF document summarises energy issues and potential energy mitigation options that could be taken. A technical appendix (TA9) to the report goes into further detail on energy and should be available to download from the LBHF website.

Hackbridge ‘Green Neighbourhood

6 April 2011: Plans to give a £150 million make-over to a “neglected corner” of the borough have been revealed. Eight hectares of land opposite Hackbridge Rail Station in Croydon could be flattened to make way for the multi-million pound “green neighbourhood” to include 775 new homes, a 4,000 square metre superstore, around 2,000 square metres of other shops and 6,000 square metres of office space. £4m invested in new London waste plan

5 April 2011: The London Waste and Recycling Board (LWARB) has announced it is awarding a £4 million loan to Orchid Environmental Limited (Orchid) to set up a new plant turning household rubbish into fuel. The facility to be sited in Bexley, and which is due to be finished and operational in early 2013, will be capable of handling 160,000 tonnes of rubbish, turning it into a range of secondary recovered fuels (SRF) that can be then be used in renewable energy plants and by industrial heat users. Hospital to heat Camden homes

4 April 2011: The Royal Free Hospital in Camden will use a combined heat and power (CHP) network to supply 1,500 Camden Council homes in nearby estates with lower cost energy.The project, due to start at the end of the year, will provide around half the total amount needed for the homes, with surplus energy from a heating plant at the hospital being pumped into an energy centre, which Camden Council will build on one of its nearby estates.The rest of the energy needed by the residents will come from the energy centre, which will also be able to supply energy for heating and hot water if the system at the Royal Free is interrupted, such as for repairs and maintenance. Olympic Park to provide green power to Stratford homes and businesses

Islington Tender for DE scheme

4 March 2011: Islington Council invites suitable expressions of interest from suppliers to design and build a new Energy Centre with a gas engine CHP plant and a District Heating (DH) network providing a  heating supply to three existing residential estates and leisure facilities owned by Islington Council.
