Can fuel poverty in London be eradicated by 2016?

18 May 2011: Fuel poverty affects almost a quarter of London households and is thought to be responsible for around 2,100 premature deaths a year. Is the capital on track to meet the Government’s target of eradicating the problem by 2016? What more can the Mayor and energy companies do to help? The London Assembly Health and Public Services Committee today launches a new investigation into the cost of energy and the role that suppliers and the Mayor can play in helping to reduce fuel poverty in the capital.

Sainburys’ ‘Carbon Academy’ to train 20,000 people by 2020

16 May 2011: Sainsbury’s is to launch a new initiative that will help revolutionise the way in which the company manages its carbon footprint. The Sainsbury’s Carbon Academy will provide environmental training to 20,000 people by 2020. Stores that have been through an earlier energy efficiency initiative have seen an average reduction in energy usage of 17 per cent.

National Debtline has seen a 180 per cent increase in callers with fuel debts over the last four years

12 May 2011: Debt advice charity the Money Advice Trust is warning consumers to pay close attention to their fuel costs after witnessing a rise in the number of people with fuel debts seeking advice. Since 2007 National Debtline, which is run by the Money Advice Trust, has seen a 181 per cent increase in the number of people advised who carry fuel debts. Just over the last twelve months the charity has seen ten per cent more people calling in with fuel debts.

CESP Annual Report

12 May 2011: Ofgem today published details on the progress of the Community Energy Saving Programme (CESP) over the year 2010. CESP requires that energy saving actions are delivered in geographical areas selected using the Income Domain of the Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD). Only superficial regional information is supplied, however measures deployed in London include insulation, improvement in heating systems and the use of district heating. The report also notes that “Of the schemes submitted to date, the estimated CO2 savings in London and Scotland are notably lower than might be expected from the number of eligible LSOAs (Lower Super Output Areas) in each region.”

Carbon Trust Standard launches free guide businesses manage emissions and energy costs

10 May 2011: The Carbon Trust Standard SME online certification is the only tool designed specifically to help small business’ certify their carbon footprint reductions. SMEs using the tool have, on average, cut their energy costs by £2,000 per year, and their carbon footprints by 13 tonnes CO2e.

Time for Government to deliver on green buildings

10 May 2011: Some of the biggest names in the property sector have today called on the Government to honour its commitments on energy efficiency ratings, as MPs prepare to debate the Energy Bill in the House of Commons. Senior industry figures have sent an open letter to the Prime Minister and other senior ministers, calling for the Energy Bill to be used to legislate on Display Energy Certificates (DECs), which provide an A-G energy efficiency rating for buildings. The certificates are currently mandatory for public sector buildings, but are not compulsory in the private sector. Non-domestic buildings currently account for up to 17% of the UK’s carbon emissions. The letter, initiated by the British Property Federation and the UK Green Building Council, argues that without legislation, private property owners could be disadvantaged by opting to display their energy rating.

Blackfriars redevelopment highlighted as Government launch Climate Resilient Infrastructure study

9 May 2011: Secretary of the State for the Environment Caroline Spelman, today launched Defra’s policy guidance in relation to improving the resilience of major infrastructure to future changes in climate. The report was launched at Blackfriars where the £550m redevelopment of the station has given significant consideration to the long term implications of climate change. The new station will be fitted with sustainability technology such as sun pipes, rain harvesting systems, thermal insulation, and Photovoltaic (PV) cell solar panels to decrease its reliance on other infrastructure such as water and electricity networks.

Green Deal and Vulnerable and Low Income Households

4 May 2011: The Energy Efficiency Partnership for Homes and DECC held a workshop to discuss the potential implications of the Green Deal for people considered to be vulnerable and/or on low incomes. The workshop was staged to inform how this detail of the Green Deal mechanism might work. Homeowners Unlikely to Take Advantage of Green Deal

3 May 2011: The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) recently surveyed its members and found that almost 44% thought homeowners were unlikely to take advantage of the Government’s flagship domestic energy efficiency programme, the Green Deal, when it launches in autumn 2012.
