First Zero Carbon Vicarage Ready For Occupation
3 May 2011: The Rev Francis Adu-Boachie, vicar of St John’s, Wembley, has moved into what is believed to be the greenest vicarage in Britain.
London 2012 issues first sustainability report
20 Apr 2011: The Olympics first full sustainability report has been issued, covering the whole London 2012 programme for the calendar year 2010, and includes an update on the games progress to utilise renewable energy.
Youth and energy
18 April 2011: Dalston’s Arcola Theatre is urging teachers and pupils to get involved in its Energy For Schools programme.
The Arcola – which aims to become Britain’s first carbon neutral theatre – officially launched the programme during Climate Week from 21-27 March. Over 150 young people from across London got a chance to find out more about the science behind living greener lifestyles in a fun and interactive way. Pupils from Clapton Girls’ Technology College were among those taking part in activities over the week.
Arcola is aiming to offer the programme to more than 1,000 children over the next 12 months. Further information on Hackney’s website.
Brixton Low Carbon Zone Green Business Project
14 April 2011: Carbon Descent are working with Lambeth Council to deliver energy audits to businesses in the Brixton area. The aim of the Brixton Low Carbon Zone Green Business Project is to involve every business within the Zone in carbon reduction to help realise the objective of a 20.12% carbon reduction by 2012. New Warm Front Funds
14 April 2011: The Government’s insulation and heating improvement fund, the Warm Front Scheme, has begun taking new applications – revised eligibility criteria and the scope of the scheme is available on the following government news release.
Sharing information on emissions from Local Authority own estate and operations
13 April 2011: Letter from Minister for Energy, Greg Barker, to Chief Executives of Councils in England, on sharing information on greenhouse gas emissions from Local Authority own estate and operations. This is to help establish a successor to national indicator 185. DECC letter and further information on this data gathering exercise.
Millions to fund street lighting in Croydon and Lewisham
13 April 2011: £151 million of government funding is to be made available to improve street lighting in Croydon and Lewisham, which, amongst other things, will allow the introduction of more efficient lighting systems. Read more on following government news release.
Islington Housing Scheme Wins Environmental Award
13 April 2011: Islington Council has become the winner of a national award for the second year in a row in recognition of their work to help reduce the carbon footprint and energy costs of fuel poor households in the area. The project, IssyClad, is the largest internal solid wall insulation programme carried out in the UK. Read more on National Energy Action’s website.
Concern raised over Mayor’s green homes target
11 April 2011: London Assembly member Murad Qureshi highlights the Mayor’s progress on on his 200,000 home energy efficiency retrofit target.
Greening Data stores
11 April 2011: Waltham Forest have adopted a strategy to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions in relation to their use of computers and other IT equipment.
Homes to be insulated around the Olympic’s site
8 April 2011 London Assembly Member Darren Johnson on proposals to help reduce CO2 emissions related to the Olympics by insulating homes in neighbouring boroughs through the Mayor’s RENEW programme.
Future of the London Development Agency’s Environment Work
6 April 2011: Transcript of oral evidence given to the London Assembly’s Environment Committee (agenda item 5) by the Mayor’s Advisor on the Environment which provides a useful – and detailed – update on a number of energy efficiency programmes currently being delivered by the LDA including the Green 500, RE:NEW and RE:FIT.
