Renewable Energy
Tidal energy trial in Thames
19 May 2011: A tidal turbine is being installed in the River Thames alongside World War II ship HQS Wellington in central London. If the trial proves successful and does not adversely affect the environment, hundreds of turbines could be installed between Kent and London. Further details are on the developer’s, Nautricity, website.
Blackfriars redevelopment highlighted as Government launch Climate Resilient Infrastructure study
9 May 2011: Secretary of the State for the Environment Caroline Spelman, today launched Defra’s policy guidance in relation to improving the resilience of major infrastructure to future changes in climate. The report was launched at Blackfriars where the £550m redevelopment of the station has given significant consideration to the long term implications of climate change. The new station will be fitted with sustainability technology such as sun pipes, rain harvesting systems, thermal insulation, and Photovoltaic (PV) cell solar panels to decrease its reliance on other infrastructure such as water and electricity networks.

Low Carbon Generators
4 May 2011: Details of low carbon energy generators located at fire stations in London operated by the London Fire Brigade (London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority). The data provides the location of the fire stations (including post code, grid reference and latitude/longitude) and the type of generators at those premises including photovoltaic (PV) array, combined heat and power (CHP), wind turbines (WT) and solar thermal panels (STU).
London 2012 Sustainability Report: A blueprint for change
20 April 2011: London 2012 has issued its first full sustainability report, covering the whole London 2012 programme for the calendar year 2010.
Unwanted fruit and veg from three of Hackney’s street markets is to be used to create green electricity
£500,000 funding available for community energy projects
April 2011: The first round of energyshare funding is now available with energyshare’s founding partners, River Cottage and British Gas committed to securing further funding in the future. As a start, British Gas have committed to distribute a further £3m to community renewable projects through the energyshare fund over the next 3 years. A free information day is to be held at River Cottage HQ on Wednesday 18th May -find out more on energyshare funding here.
FIT installation data
1 April 2011: Ofgem have just issued their second quarterly report (see 1 February 2011 newsstory in relation to the first release) on the installation of Feed in Tariff (FIT) accredited generators. Since the last report, a further 10,000 installations have been added – bringing the total number of sites data is reported on to 30,000 installations. Download the ‘Feed-in Tariff Installation Report on Ofgem’s FIT webpage.
Using Ofgem’s data AEA Technology have set up a website allowing aggregate FIT installation data to be identified by region and borough and technologies employed. For more detail go to the AEA Microgeneration Index.

A study of photovoltaics in an urban setting
15 March 2011: Abstract of a paper from research being conducted at London South Bank University’s Centre for Efficient and Renewable Energy in Buildings (CEREB) highlighting what happens when PV’s suffer from over-shading.
HCA provides FIT advice
15 March 2011: The Homes and Communities Agency has today issued a statement to its Investment Partners to explain how the Feed In Tariff (FIT) relates to schemes that have received HCA funding, clarifying issues about State Aid rules on ‘double public subsidy’ . Where an Investment Partner has been awarded funding through the National Affordable Housing Programme, or any other from of public subsidy, they will need to demonstrate that this funding has not been used to pay for installations for which Feed In Tariff is then sought.
Renewable energy in your local area, an opportunity not a threat!
14 March 2011: Series of useful presentations from a conference organised by the Local Government Association (LGA) focussing on how local authorities can explore opportunities to start energy generation projects.
