Renewable Energy
Ealing’s social housing PV programme
1 March 2011: Ealing council are working with energy provider Eaga to install free solar photovoltaic systems on social housing tenants properties. More information on EAGA’s website here.
A study of photovoltaics in an urban setting
1 March 2010: An abstract of some interesting research conducted at the Centre for Efficient and Renewable Energy in Buildings (CEREB), based at London South Bank University, of what happened to a neighbouring PV installation when it became overshadowed by a new building. Download from www.cereb.org.uk.
Mayor’s responses to London Assembly energy and climate change questions
23 February 2011: Questions included Renewable Energy use by London Underground; police stations retrofitted under the Mayor’s RE:FIT programme; comment on the Mayor’s RE:NEW programme; why some lights can’t be switched off easily at tube stations; and funding of the Mayor’s electric vehicle programme.

How local economies can benefit from renewable energy
16 February 2011:New Local Government Network (NLGN) report on opportunities for councils to make greater use of renewable energy systems and benefit financially through the use of the ‘Feed-in Tariff’ and forthcoming ‘Renewable Heat Incentive’. Download the report How local economies can benefit from renewable energy.
AEA Microgeneration Index
February 2011: Consultancy AEA have taken Ofgem’s Feed in Tariff (FIT) quarterly data reports of installations of qualifying renewable energy technologies, tidied up the excel spreadsheet data, to help provide a clearer regional breakdown of capacity and types of renewable energy systems installed. For London this goes down to individual borough reports.
Building a Low Carbon Britain
7 Feb 2011: Forum for the Future and ADEPT report launched today which makes five recommendations for how local authorities can prepare their areas and communities for a low carbon future. It presents four scenarios which explore plausible, alternative visions of a low carbon UK. The report states that “Local authorities will have a key role to play in the low carbon economy of the future. This project aimed to help local authorities understand what a low-carbon economy means for them and to find opportunities for low-carbon innovation in a time of public sector cuts.” Press release and report available here.

FIT installation report
1 February 2011: Ofgem have just issued the first of what will be quarterly reports on the installation of Feed in Tariff (FIT) accredited generators. This report and spreadsheet provides detail on close to 20,000 installations accredited over the period April 2010 (when the FIT regime started) to December 2010. The spreadsheet provides geographical information) (but will need a bit of work to pull out the London numbers only). Download the ‘Feed-in Tariff Installation Report Dec 2010’ on Ofgem’s FIT webpage here.
Richmond schools to run on sun-power
28 January 2011: Three schools in Richmond’s Low Carbon Zone have celebrated the installation of solar panels on their buildings as a result of grants from the council and British Gas. Further news from Richmond here. More information on the ‘My Solar School’ programme by British Gas.

Ealing slick at cooking oil recycling
7 January 2011: An Ealing Council recycling centre is top of the tables for waste cooking oil collection. Greenford Recycling Centre has collected the most cooking oil for recycling in London, and the second highest volume in the country. Just one litre of used cooking oil can be converted into a new green fuel called LF100 to produce enough clean electricity to make 240 cups of tea. The total amount collected in Ealing is enough to power eight homes for a year or an energy-saving 20W light bulb for each Ealing resident for five and a half hours.
DECC Regional Renewable Energy Assessment Methodology
12 October 2010: To help ensure a robust evidence base to support the deployment of renewable energy, DECC has published a renewable and low-carbon capacity assessment methodology. The evidence produced by applying the methodology will help to support local authorities and communities to make the most of opportunities for renewable energy deployment in their areas.
