Generation Plant Efficiency Needs to be Improved
12 July 2011: Radio 4’s Today programme coverage of the launch of the Government’s White Paper on electricity market reform (to be launched later today) included a short piece on how new generating plant would have to become much more efficient. The gave an example of London’s Citigen Combined Heat and Power (CHP) scheme, operated by E.ON, as a future example of how power stations would have to operate. Citigen is sited deep underground Smithfield’s market providing heat and cooling to a number of city institutions. Listen to the radio piece here.

Pimlico and Whitehall Decentralised Energy
7 July 2011: DECC’s Carbon Management Plan (see Note 7 of press release linked) published yesterday, provides a brief update on an LDA project which involves the connection between the Whitehall and Pimlico district heating schemes in order to improve the operational efficiency of the two existing combined heat and power (CHP) plants. The Plan states that “The feasibility of linking to the Whitehall District Heating Scheme will be investigated if this Scheme is opened to new participants over the period of the Plan. An estimated cost for joining the scheme has been included in the planned projects below but it is not currently possible to estimate what the likely costs or savings would be.” £50,000 has been allocated by DECC to progress this action.

Belvedere Incinerator Briefing Note
14 June 2011: Note of Bexley Council’s Environment Committee’s visit to the Belvedere Incinerator. The note provides the following information: “Testing of the [66MW] turbine is still under way and it is anticipated it will be fully functioning by the end of May 2011. ..Members discussed the potential for the facility to become acombined heat and power plant. It was reported that the site was built to have the capability to provide heat to a local facility such as hospital if there such demand and Cory Environmental would be keen to explore such an opportunity should it arise.”
Dalston Square – Decentralised Energy
May 2011: A presentation and case study by the energy services section of E.ON on the Dalston Decentralised Energy (DE) project that they have developed and now operate. Serving 553 residential units over 5 blocks with retail units and a public library, the energy centre is powered by gas-fired combined heat and power units (CHPs) and gas/biomass boilers.

New DECC CHP Site Assessment Tool
16 May 2011: New DECC tool posted on CHP Focus website allowing users to “get an indicative assessment and review potential options for installing CHP on a particular site and it has been carefully designed for users who have limited knowledge of CHP.”
Hospital’s Decentralised Energy System
26 April 2011: Mitie have been commissioned by the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead to develop an energy centre incorporating onsite CHP generation.
E.ON to manage ESCo set-up
21 April 2011: E.ON and Barratt Homes are working together to develop 1,900 low carbon homes in two projects across London. The developments, the former St. Andrews Hospital in east London and New South Quarter in Croydon, will utilise a centralised combined heat and power (CHP) units and biomass boilers to supply heat and hot water to residents.
Hospital to heat Camden homes
4 April 2011: The Royal Free Hospital in Camden will use a combined heat and power (CHP) network to supply 1,500 Camden Council homes in nearby estates with lower cost energy. The project, due to start at the end of the year, will provide around half the total amount needed for the homes, with surplus energy from a heating plant at the hospital being pumped into an energy centre, which Camden Council will build on one of its nearby estates. The rest of the energy needed by the residents will come from the energy centre, which will also be able to supply energy for heating and hot water if the system at the Royal Free is interrupted, such as for repairs and maintenance. Further information from Camden here.
