London Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) Case Studies
8 February 2012: DECC have just posted case studies highlighting the efforts participants in the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) have made in managing their energy and improving their energy efficiency. Examples of London organisations include:
E.ON leads CHP drive in London
January 2012: E.ON provide an update on their plans to extend their Citigen district heating scheme, based in the City, which serves both private and City Corporation properties, the latter including the Guildhall, Smithfield Market, the Barbican Arts Centre and the Museum of London. Read the interview here: more on Citigen here and here.
City of London diverts waste to Belvedere incinerator
November 2011: Letsrecycle.com story highlighting how “All residual waste collected from the City of London’s 9,000 residents and street cleaning operations is being processed in Cory Environmental’s £350 million energy-from-waste (EfW) incinerator at Belvedere in Bexley, South East London. The Belvedere EfW plant, known as the Riverside Resource Recovery facility, has the capacity to treat 585,000 tonnes of waste a year… The Corporation of London said the plant was ‘one of the most efficient facilities in Europe’ – and would generate a net of about 66MW of electricity, feeding into the National Grid with enough electricity to serve around 100,000 homes.” Read the full story here.
More on the Belvedere waste to energy plant here.
Environmental Health – acting to reduce the impact of climate change
September 2011: A useful report released in July by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, highlighing how Environment Health Practitioners (EHPs) across the country are taking action to mitigate and adapt to climate change. The document entitled Our world, our wellbeing showcases 65 EHP interesting initiatives including schemes introduced by Croydon and the City of London Corporation, covering issues such as retrofitting, behaviour change and fuel poverty programmes.
Generation Plant Efficiency Needs to be Improved
12 July 2011: Radio 4’s Today programme coverage of the launch of the Government’s White Paper on electricity market reform (to be launched later today) included a short piece on how new generating plant would have to become much more efficient. The gave an example of London’s Citigen Combined Heat and Power (CHP) scheme, operated by E.ON, as a future example of how power stations would have to operate. Citigen is sited deep underground Smithfield’s market providing heat and cooling to a number of city institutions. Listen to the radio piece here.

Identifying sustainable energy options for your area
15 February 2011: Local authorities are exploring opportunities and starting energy generation projects across the UK. With the right to sell electricity and set up energy companies, local authorities can earn money through financial incentives such as the feed-in tariffs and the renewable heat incentive. Renewable energy is an investment opportunity for local government. This Local Government Group publication highlights examples of councils and communities that are leading on energy generation. It explains what they did to start and fund energy projects and the benefits these projects have brought to their area and includes examples from Tower Hamlets, Islington and the City of London.
City of London Decentralised Energy and Pipe Subways Study
December 2009: Detailed study undertaken of Decentralised Energy and Pipe Subways in the City of London.
