August 2011: The Sustainable Energy Academy’s Superhome initiative seeks to establish “a network of exemplar, old dwellings which have undergone an energy-efficiency retrofit and are local and publicly accessible, within 15 minutes, to nearly everyone in the country”. A number of these highly energy efficient  Superhomes can be visited during London’s Open House Weekend on 17 and 18 September 2011 including:

Many of the homes have managed to achieve CO2 reductions of 60%+ using a variety of measures ranging from draught proofing, triple glazing and high levels of insulation (external and internal wall insulation, flooring insulation and flat roof insulation) to LED lighting, sun pipes,  PV, solar thermal, micro wind turbines and also wood burning stoves. Mayor Announces next phase of RE:NEW

4 August 2011: The Mayor has today announced the next phase of the RE:NEW home energy efficiency programme.  The scheme is to be provided to 55,000 homes in specific areas across the capital between now and May 2012 with homes in parts of Barking and Dagenham, Hackney, Lewisham and Waltham Forest being the first to receive this benefit.

To find out if your home might be within an area, check the files attached below to search for your street name. If your street is on the list you can make a booking online or by calling 0800 978 8332.

Further information on the roll-out of RE:NEW across London is here.
Key points from the press release are as follows:

  • RE:NEW is funded by the Mayor and all 32 London boroughs have signed as partners in the scheme, which is being delivered in partnership with London Councils and the Energy Saving Trust. Barking & Dagenham, Hackney and Waltham Forest, with appointed contractor, London Warm Zone, and Lewisham with appointed contractor, Osborne Energy, are the first to roll out RE:NEW. The focus in these areas will be on providing energy monitors and stand by switches.
  • The RE:NEW offer involves a full home energy survey carried out by a qualified home energy advisor, which takes roughly 90 minutes to do. Residents will then get a tailor-made energy saving report once the visit is complete and have a range of free energy saving measures installed.
  • At the same time as improving energy efficiency, RE:NEW aims to reduce fuel poverty in London and each household will be offered a benefits check to ensure residents are claiming all of the benefits and grants they are entitled to.
  • RE:NEW is not an ‘on-demand’ service and is being delivered on an area by area basis because trials showed this approach resulted in more cost-effective and higher take up, helping to ensure that the city’s ambitious targets can be met. It has been designed to be as easy as possible for residents.
  • The aim is to attain the funding to expand the programme to 200,000 homes by the end of 2012 and 1.2 million homes by 2015. This will be subject to additional funding being secured principally through the Government’s ‘Green Deal’.

Simple energy efficiency measures can save around £322 a year

July 2011:   Centrica has just published some work they commissioned earlier this year from the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr), which conducted the largest ever independent analysis of natural gas use in British homes based on 40 million meter readings .  The report found that customers who adopted a range of simple measures saved on average £322 each year, and saw a 44 per cent fall in their gas use between 2006 and 2010. The research is presented regionally (hence specific London conclusions presented) and some of the outputs include:

  • British Gas has a lower proportion of customers in London than other parts of the country
  • Appendix E provides British Gas customers average domestic natural gas consumption by postcode in London
  • An indication  of potential cost savings that can be achieved in London and elsewhere by the adoption of energy efficiency solutions.

Energy Consumption in London’s Homes

29 July 2011: DECC’s latest Energy Consumption in the UK release includes data and factsheets on the use of energy in the  industrial, transport, domestic and service sectors. Some of the findings from the domestic sector factsheet include:

  • In 2010 domestic consumption was 32 per cent of total UK final energy consumption
  • The majority of energy consumed in the domestic sector is for spacing heating which in 2009 represented 61 per cent of total domestic consumption.
  • Water heating and lighting appliances accounted for a further 18 per cent each with cooking accounting for a further 3 per cent
  • Electricity consumption for lighting purposes represented 33 per cent of electricity consumption by household domestic appliances, followed by cooking (32 per cent) and cold appliances (14 per cent)

No other official data providing a breakdown to this level of energy consumption in homes exists. No regional breakdown is provided or breakdown by dwelling type, hence this is the best available dataset to use in relation to energy consumption in Londoners’ homes. See the following Ofgem factsheet for information on typical total domestic energy consumption.
