Costing an Enhanced Decent Homes Standard

Raising the energy standard in London – What would this cost?
5 April 2011: The Centre for Sustainable Energy, in conjunction with the Metropolitan Housing Partnership (MHP), have published work, commissioned by the Mayor, to estimate the total cost of delivering an enhanced environmental standard for social rented homes in London. The research estimates that even the most basic measures would cost London a minimum of £4 billion, with up to £10 billion for more ambitious measures. Successful retrofit must include more choice and support for tenants
22 March 2011:A survey has found that 38 per cent of social renters are given no choice about energy efficiency improvements made to their home, over 14 per cent are worried they won’t know how to use energy-saving equipment and 17 per cent are concerned retrofit technology won’t actually work. English Indices of Deprivation 2010
21 March 2011: The English Indices of Deprivation 2010 measure relative levels of deprivation at Lower layer Super Output Areas (LLSOA).
HCA provides FIT advice
15 March 2011: The Homes and Communities Agency has today issued a statement to its Investment Partners to explain how the Feed In Tariff (FIT) relates to schemes that have received HCA funding, clarifying issues about State Aid rules on ‘double public subsidy’ . Where an Investment Partner has been awarded funding through the National Affordable Housing Programme, or any other from of public subsidy, they will need to demonstrate that this funding has not been used to pay for installations for which Feed In Tariff is then sought.
First certified passivhaus retrofit
2 March 2011: Octavia Housing have retrofitted an 1850s terraced house in a Holland Park conservation area to strict Passivhaus levels. Read more on the Passivhaus project here.

English Housing Survey: Headline Report 2009-10
24 February 2011:Key indicators on energy performance in housing are detailed in this latest update published by CLG. Accompanying the report is a spreadsheet (English Housing Survey Headline Report 2009-10: Housing Stock Tables) providing a series of tables and figures on a number of very useful energy efficiency indicators. However – unfortunately no regional breakdown of these results are provided. Report and table downloadable from CLG’s website here.

Includes a regional breakdown which highlights that most certificates awarded were in London, and also that London scored the highest SAP rating of dwellings built. The CLG report and spreadsheets of data sets are available here.

Southern Housing’s Green Doctors
2 February 2011: Southern Housing Group residents will be trained to provide energy saving hints, tips advice and services to residents in up to 500 of the Group’s homes as part of a scheme aimed at reducing fuel poverty in Hackney. More here.
