FOE – Cuts to local government funding could decimate councils’ ability to tackle climate change

19 May 2011: Friends of the Earth have today published a short and useful study (undertaken by local government expert, Prof. Tony Travers, of the LSE) providing a summary of the changes currently being applied to local government and the likely adverse impacts that will arise in relation to council action to tackle climate change.

Sharing information on emissions from Local Authority own estate and operations

Local Carbon Frameworks Update

15 February 2011:The government is currently running a pilot programme with 9 local authority areas to co-design a series of Local Carbon Frameworks (LCF) to identify what works at what spatial level, and develop templates for action on carbon for all local authorities. Detail the LCF programme and the list of the projects currently underway – which includes a project in the London Borough of Haringey – are available on  DECC’s website here.

Building a Low Carbon Britain

7 Feb 2011: Forum for the Future and ADEPT report launched today which makes five recommendations for how local authorities can prepare their areas and communities for a low carbon future. It presents four scenarios which explore plausible, alternative visions of a low carbon UK. The report states that  “Local authorities will have a key role to play in the low carbon economy of the future. This project aimed to help local authorities understand what a low-carbon economy means for them and to find opportunities for low-carbon innovation in a time of public sector cuts.” Press release and report available here.

Carbon footprint of London’s Local Authority Procurement

November 2010: London Councils’ Capital Ambition project has funded a groundbreaking project that has identified how to reduce the carbon footprint of London’s £8 billion public procurement. The three year project, delivered by Trucost has evaluated 90% of suppliers to London local authorities, a total of over 9,000 suppliers. 29 London Borough Councils, the GLA, City of London and London’s Fire and Emergency Planning Authority have taken part in this project and have been provided with reports that detail their spend, their most carbon-intensive suppliers and provides a modelling tool specific to the authority to that details how changes to carbon use in suppliers will impact their overall supply-chain carbon use.
