£4m invested in new London waste plan
5 April 2011: The London Waste and Recycling Board (LWARB) has announced it is awarding a £4 million loan to Orchid Environmental Limited (Orchid) to set up a new plant turning household rubbish into fuel. The facility to be sited in Bexley, and which is due to be finished and operational in early 2013, will be capable of handling 160,000 tonnes of rubbish, turning it into a range of secondary recovered fuels (SRF) that can be then be used in renewable energy plants and by industrial heat users. Further information on LWARB press release.
Funding approved for new gasification project
9 February 2011:The London Waste and Recycling Board (LWARB) has today agreed a £8.9 million loan to Biossence East London Ltd to support the development of what will be one of the UK’s first large scale advanced waste to energy gasification plants. Anticipated to operational in 2013 the 19MW generator will turn 100,000 tonnes of waste each year into energy. The site has been bought from Ford, who will part-benefit from electricity generated by the plant. Further information on the LWARB press release. More on Bioessence here.

Waste energy from local plant could generate heating to nearly 3,000 homes
27 January 2011: Southwark Council is working with Veolia Environmental Services looking at the possibility of heating nearly three thousand homes across five estates using waste energy from the nearby SELCHP generation plant – further details here.
Detailed information on opportunities to use heat from SELCHP are contained in an energy assessment undertaken for the Canada Water Area Action Plan (AAP). Published in three sections, the full report is available from Southwark’s website here.
Further details of Veolia’s plans for SELCHP are set out in the following Mayor’s planning report (763 Old Kent Road – search for ‘SELCHP’ in the report).
